Our Counseling Services

Illiana’s counseling department serves students and their families in a variety of ways. Students are welcome to talk to our counselors at any time about any need, whether academic, spiritual or personal in nature.

Our counselors both hold master’s degrees in counseling and are certified as school counselors. Mrs. Melanie Benes generally works with students whose last names begin with A-K and Mr. Neil Zandstra works with students whose last names begin with L-Z.

Our counseling department helps students with many different aspects of education and life. The most common include:

• Course Requests: Each year we visit classrooms to help students to select courses that are appropriate for them and meet graduation requirements.
• Future Planning: Decisions about what to do after high school are important, and we work with students to examine options and explore what God is leading them to do after graduation.
• College: Most Illiana students continue their education, and we help them with college selection as well as the application and financial aid process.
• Personal Needs: The adolescent years are an important transition between childhood and adulthood and, as such, can be stressful for many students. Proverbs 12:15 says “A wise man seeks counsel,” and our counselors are available to talk one-on-one with students in need of someone to talk with in a confidential setting. Everyone faces challenges from time to time, and it’s our goal that students freely access our services without feeling any stigma in doing so.

Our counselors – like all of our faculty and administration – care deeply for our students and are dedicated to serving their needs. That being said, at times the situations that we and our students face can be very challenging. We appreciate your prayers as we strive to meet the many needs of the students at Illiana Christian High School.
